5 Tips on How to Care For Leather

Due to the special nature of leather, any item made from it deserves to be treated with immense care. You can’t just throw leather in the wash; you need to show some love to it. For all leather lovers, here are some five basic tips that will make the material last long and maintain its aesthetic appeal.

Avoid Wrapping Leather in Plastic

Don’t wrap leather items like leather laptop bags, leather key chains, leather credit card holders, etc. in a plastic bag as that prevents leather from ‘breathing’. Even the smallest amount of moisture can cause mildew and mold (types of fungi). In fact, wrapping a leather item even in a newspaper is a bad idea as the ink of the paper can rub off onto the leather.

Instead, wrap leather in a pillow case, a suitcase or a wooden trunk with bubble wrapping sheets. And allow the intake of air once every two weeks to halt the growth of fungi.

When Wet, Let it Dry Naturally

While great care must be taken to prevent water spilling on leather, you can’t prevent an occasional splash. When that happens, let water dry naturally. Avoid using direct heat to dry the leather. Tools like hairdryer will only cause the leather’s skin to get creased. Leather is a delicate material, especially when wet, and its colour can come off easily. Therefore, drying at room temperature with gentle air works better than direct heat.

Clean other Spills with Damp Cloth

If anything else, such as food, ink or mud, gets spilled onto your leather handbag or leather travel wallet, carefully blot it off with a damp cloth. Beware of using any kind of soap or foreign chemicals, else you will end up having a rug that is of no use.

Use Leather Conditioner

If leather gets too dry, rub a dollop of leather conditioner, preferably a one recommended by leather experts. Leave it on for 10 minutes, and then wipe off the excess. For a more youthful look, try conditioning your leather items once in a month.

Avoid Overstuffing Leather Bags

Once leather is stretched out, it will never really return to its former taut self. Therefore you should avoid stuffing your leather handbag or a leather travel wallet too much. Particularly, if you stretch a pure leather bag when wet or very humid, it will stretch even faster. So if you want a sleek, new looking leather just learn to carry the right amount of weight in it.
